Last Resort
After my conversation with Maggie, I went home and got to work right away. Victor was working late again in an effort to get overtime pay, so I was alone in the apartment. First, I called my parents. I posed the question as if I were doing research for a story I was working on.
“So, say I had gotten into financial trouble—I don’t know, a foreclosure or something—how much cash at most would you be able to give me to help out?” I asked on speakerphone.
“What kind of story is this again, hon?” my father asked.
“The epidemic of American credit use and lack of financial responsibility,” I lied.
“Wow, they sure do have you going after the hard stuff, don’t they!” my mom piped up.
“Yeah, they sure do. So, how much would you say?”
“Well,” my father replied, thinking for a moment. “I guess the most we could hand over in cash would be about $30,000. We’d have to keep some in the bank for a few mortgage payments and emergencies.”
I jotted down this number.
“Okay, great,” I said. “You know the American public only saves 5 percent of their annual income, while the average Chinese household, for example, saves 30 percent…” I droned on.
I did the same experiment with my two aunts and their husbands, my adult cousins, a few other friends back home, and Archie. When I had hung up my last phone call, I looked at the paper in front of me and totaled the numbers. It came to $94,000. With an exhausted sigh, I held my head with both hands and sat there, immobile, until I heard Victor’s key in the door.
Quickly, I shoved the piece of paper into my notebook and looked like I was working on something else.
“Hey, angel,” came Victor’s deep voice behind me. He sounded tired. I put down my pen and turned in my seat. I looked at my tall, gorgeous, kind boyfriend—I lingered lovingly over his masculine jaw, his thick lashes, and his dark eyes—and I felt my heart breaking.
I can’t let this man go to jail. I can’t let him ruin his finances. I love him too much. He’s too important to me.
As he dropped his bag on the ground and took off his coat, I got out of my seat and went to him. As I approached, he pulled me close, wrapped his arms around me, and kissed me on the lips. “God, it’s good to be home,” he said as he gave me his crooked grin.
“It’s good to have you home,” I replied with a bright smile. “And I have exciting news.”
“Let me guess,” he said as he held me and walked me backwards toward the couch. “There was a mutiny at work and you guys threw that rich prick Galvin out on the street.”
I suppressed a cringe. Victor clearly disliked Galvin and it made me feel worse that he was now involved in our problems, and that he had proposed something so inappropriate…but it was possibly the only way out of our mess.
